Lithuania’s Sport1 Chooses Jünger Audio’s LEVEL MAGIC To Control Its Broadcast Audio Levels

Riga, Lithuania: Broadcasters the world over are well aware of the problems caused by surprise level changes when switching from one source to another.

For sports broadcasters this issue is particularly relevant because they have to deal with such a wide variety of incoming audio sources. Peak level and dynamic range not only vary between programmes but can even vary during the same programme depending on how many different audio sources are being used. Balancing these so that viewers don’t have to rely on their remote controls to constantly adjust the volume is a major problem – and one that requires an effective and economic solution.

In Eastern Europe, specialist sports channel Sport1 has found its answer in the shape of LEVEL MAGIC, a comprehensive series of Level control devices developed by German manufacturer Jünger Audio. The satellite channel broadcasts in a variety of different languages and is popular with sports fans in Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Romania because it holds the TV rights to show NFL soccer games in these territories.

In recent months Sport1 has installed a LEVEL MAGIC C8000 frame at its transmission centre in Lithuania. The system, which was supplied and installed by Jünger Audio’s Latvian distributor TILTS Integration Ltd, is capable of using any kind of I/O (Analog and Digital) sources, as well as SDI, HD/SDI, Dolby 5.1 and all its related metadata. Automated audio loudness control is provided by a sophisticated adaptive level control algorithm that is designed to adjust the level from any source at any time, with no pumping, breathing or distortion. This is based on a simultaneous combination of an AGC, a Transient Processor for fast changes and a “look ahead” Peak Limiter for continuous unattended control of any programme material, regardless of its original source.

Sport1’s technical director Julijus Jakutavičius says: “We chose Jünger Audio’s LEVEL MAGIC because it provides a safe algorithm for controlling the audio level of all our programme material – and it does this without causing distortion or applying severe dynamic processing to the sound.”

Jakutavičius adds that the automated nature of the LEVEL MAGIC system was another factor in its favour. Once the parameters have been set, there is very little that the operator has to do as the system effectively looks after itself.

“We were also impressed by its powerful routing and distribution of signals - and by its modular structure, which gives us an easy upgrade path for the future,” he says. “It has all the flexibility we need for multichannel use and it is also Dolby-ready. We have been running our LEVEL MAGIC system for a few months now and we are very happy with its performance. It works perfectly and delivers consistently well balanced audio.”

Sport1 has also invested in two MIX4 digital audio mixers from Jünger Audio, which are being used to prepare programme material and record blocks of speech. With 4 stereo full-featured Channel Strips and SDI in and out, this small, cost-effective and easy to use mixer is ideally suited for de-embedding audio from raw material and mixing this with speech and other sources, before embedding the mix back to SDI.
